Presbyopia Treatment At Texas Eye Surgeons

Are you over 40-years-old? Are you noticing that it is getting more and more difficult to see things up close, but you can see far away just fine? If so, you may have presbyopia. Presbyopia is not a disease. It is actually a natural part of the aging process.

Are Presbyopia and Farsightedness Different?

Presbyopia and farsightedness are two different conditions with two different causes. Farsightedness occurs due to a misshapen eyeball. This can cause the light to focus incorrectly when it enters the eye which distorts your vision. Presbyopia occurs when your lens becomes less flexible. This is common as you get older.

What Are the Symptoms Of Presbyopia?

There are a few symptoms that you will experience if you have presbyopia. These include:

  • Blurry vision while reading or doing any close-up work while you have no issues with seeing objects at a distance.
  • You need to hold reading material far away from your face to see it properly.
  • Headaches while doing close-up work.
  • Eye fatigue while doing close-up work.

How Is Presbyopia Diagnosed?

If you are experiencing the symptoms of presbyopia, you should schedule an appointment with your eye doctor. Presbyopia can be diagnosed during your annual eye exam.

How Is Presbyopia Treated?

There are a few ways that presbyopia can be treated.

  • Glasses: Reading glasses that you can buy at the store can help you to see close up. If you are having trouble with your distance vision as well, bifocals are a good option. If you don’t like the line that is present in the middle of a bifocal lens, progressive lenses are a great alternative. Progressive lenses are similar to bifocals except the transition between the two prescriptions is gradual and you won’t see the line. Progressive lenses cost more than bifocals; however, if you don’t want a visible line, it will be worth the extra cost.
  • Contact lenses: If you prefer contacts to glasses, there are two options. First, you can go with a multifocal lens that can improve your close-up and distance vision. You could also use monovision lenses. You would wear a lens in one eye to improve your close-up vision and a lens in the other eye to improving your distance vision. Your family ophthalmologist can help you decide which option is best for you.
  • KAMRA Inlay: this is an implant that your surgical eye doctor would implant in your eye. As long as you haven’t had cataract surgery, you would be a good candidate.
